Rock the Necklace!

Rock the NecklaceIf you’re in the market for some new jewelry, then I highly suggest you invest in some dependable necklaces.  Growing up, I wasn’t much of a necklace person.  I used to be strictly earrings and rings, but, as of late, I’ve been able to appreciate the worth of a necklace.  For one, it’s a simple and easy way to spruce up your outfit.  They’re perfect for high and scoop necklines.  You can take a solid outfit and add some extra oomph to it by wearing a chunky necklace or a few simple chains.  They even work well with casual tee shirts, helping to make them look more fashion forward.  I, personally, have fallen in love with gold chunky necklaces and collar colored ones.  In my opinion, they make the biggest statement, but sometimes you need a little silver chain for your look.  However, if you don’t know where to start, there are three types of necklaces I think every girl should have.

First, you need a gold necklace and a silver one.  They are your neutral metals and, depending on the rest of your outfit, either one will usually work.  I may favor gold, but I do have some silver pieces that have saved my outfits in the past.  I would recommend at least one of these to be chunky for a statement piece.  Second, get yourself the color neutrals, which means black, white, or grey.  These will be essential to tying together an outfit when metallics won’t do.  Since at this point you’re already building your collection, mix and match lengths and thickness to add some variety to your necklace picks.  I tend to go for black or white, but grey works, too.  Lastly, dare to be bold with colors.  When you’re wearing a mainly monochromatic outfit, a pop of color from your necklace can take your whole look to the next level.  I have a bunch of different colors in my necklace stash from orange and mint green to most recently cobalt blue and emerald green and I’m still looking for more.  I really can’t specify which colors you should invest in because it all depends on your personal tastes.  However, I will say look at the colors in your wardrobe and try out those shades along with their complimentary colors.  For example, my orange necklace goes well with a denim blue shirt that I have.

Hope you all enjoy rocking the necklace as much as I do.  Don’t forget to get creative and wear it only if you like it.  Fashion is supposed to be fun and a form of expression, so scream loud and proud with your fashion!

Happy Thanksgiving!

I just wanted to take a moment to wish everyone reading this a very happy Thanksgiving.  It’s a special day of the year that celebrates everything you have to be thankful for.  It may be something as simple as being able to spend Thanksgiving with your loved ones, even if you fight and argue with the people closest to you.  Either way, I hope you spend your Thanksgiving with people you love and that you fill yourself with an immense amount of positive energy.  Take today to appreciate the little things as well as the bigger things.  Remember every detail that you may have forgotten that play a big part in your life today.  Think about the things you are fortunate enough to have and to experience.  If you’re list is short now, then focus on that short list and work toward making that list longer for next year.  This time of the year isn’t meant to make you feel like a failure or that you have nothing.  It is meant to make you realize the good things you do have.

Personally, I have a lot to be thankful for this year.  I know I say this pretty much every year, but it’s true and I honestly believe that this has been my best year yet.  I graduated from college, I have created so many unforgettable memories, and the opportunities continue to come my way as I am already working on the projects that I’ve always wanted to focus on.  On top of that, the past year has brought me closer to the people I’ve always shared a special connection with, while also putting me in touch with individuals who were complete strangers this time last year.  I’ve created so many good relationships this year that it’s hard not to be thankful for them.  It’s hard to not be thankful for my family that has always been by my side and who I feel so blessed to have spent so much time with.  I’m thankful for the lessons I’ve learned and the ways that I’ve grown.  I’m thankful for the strong foundation I’ve created for 2014.  I’m thankful for the good life I live and the even better future I see right in front of me.  Life is good and I’m thankful for every single piece of it.

Happy Thanksgiving my loves!

2013 AMA Recap!

You all should know by now that I love award shows, especially when it comes to the music ones.  Unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the American Music Awards live last night, but I caught myself up enough to share my two cents about the night with you.  I won’t dwell on the winners and losers of the night, even though Ms. Riri deserves some big ups for being the first recipient of the American Music Icon Award.  She definitely serves as an inspiration for me in between all of her madness.

Moving on to the fashion of the night, I thought there was a lot of the same.  There were a few people who dared to be different like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga, but they mostly hit the mark for me.  I could point out a few favorite looks of the night, including Christina Aguilera, Ciara, and Naya Rivera.  They all kept it classy enough for the awards show, while still showing off some personality.  I loved loved loved Christina’s stark white gown with the side slit paired with silver accessories, short curls, and red lips.  She embodied the image of a diva and, with her blessed voice, Christina can do that!  Ciara strayed away from the solid colored dress, opting for a black patterned dress that had some sheerness to it, too.  I appreciate Ciara’s boldness, yet her specific understanding of balance by keeping the rest of her look to the basics.  Naya deserves some props for her gown, as well.  Her black, long sleeve dress was topped off by a flowing train, but kept its sex appeal with a slit down the center to show off some cleavage.  However, it was the gold cuffs that did it for me.  The bold gold against the jet black was genius to me.

As for the performances, I was pretty impressed by what each artist brought to the table.  Kendrick Lamar’s R&B’d up versions of “Swimming Pools” and “Poetic Justice” were pluses for me, while even Miley Cyrus made watching her performance worth while.  I wasn’t here for the cat theme, but I can applaud her on her raw emotion throughout the song.  A Great Big World with Christina Aguilera, Imagine Dragons, and, of course, Rihanna all gave great performances that didn’t leave me disappointed, while Ariana Grande definitely did her thing, too.  I really think she is the second coming of Mariah Carey and she made me a believer in her as an artist with the retro vibe of her performance last night.  However, my favorite performance of the night has to go to Jennifer Lopez.  I will be the first to admit that she hasn’t been on point with her music game for a while, but her tribute to Celia Cruz last night was more than respectable.  Sure, she doesn’t have the same lung power or range that Celia had, but she knows how to dance, making her a good performer.  I saw a lot of the old J-Lo in last night’s performance and I was happy to see Jenny from the block paying tribute to one of my favorite singers as opposed to the new diva-esque Jennifer Lopez.

Overall, I was not disappointed by the AMA’s and I can’t wait to see what another year of music will bring us!

Hold Nothing Back

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my twenty one years of life, it’s that having no regrets is one of the most satisfying things in the world.  You never have to wonder what could have been and you’ll never have to look back at the past, thinking the phrase “what if.”  Everybody is faced with choices on a daily basis and we are forced to make decisions that we are going to live with for the rest of our lives, no matter how big or small.  I don’t know about you, but I would much rather make a decision that I firmly believe in, rather than one I was coerced into.  I try to live my life in a way that is honest and genuine.  If I think something is right, then I’d rather do that.

When it comes to my family and friends, I tell them I love them, I am affectionate toward them, and I help them in their times of need in any way that I can.  I don’t want any of them to disappear, leaving me feeling like I could’ve done more for them, even if it was simply making them feel more loved.  If I love them and care for them, I want them to know right then and there, not when it’s too late.  When it comes to my goals and my career in general, I want the choices I make to be based off of what I believe is the best thing, not what society believes is the best thing.  I would rather take a risk, nurturing a passion for the arts and independence, then “give up” and apply for a traditional job.  If I don’t dedicate myself to what I believe in first, then I’ll never know if it could have worked in the first place.

Regrets are horrible because you can’t make them go away so easily.  The past is the past and it can’t be changed.  Although your mind can be changed and the way you look at the past can be altered, it is much easier said than done.  I would rather not have to go through the trouble of regretting in the first place.  I prefer to be honest with myself and make a decision I can live with, than one I have to erase from my memory.  I do have some regrets, but they’re entirely from situations that happened years ago, before I even knew what I wanted in life.  I’m still coping with those regrets, so I have no intentions of adding anything more to the list.  I fully intend to live my life to the fullest to ensure I never look back wondering what could have been.

Blow Me Away

Rock me to sleep

as you blow me away

Because your gusts and threats

are what soothe me

until I can see the day.

I feel you surround me.

I know you’re right here.

You haven’t abandoned me just yet

and your menace

is what makes you so dear.

I missed you.

It’s been so long

since I’ve heard a creak.

I longed for your cool warmth

and I must admit

it makes me so weak.

Please don’t leave so soon.

Keep your symphony tapping on my window.

Let me fall asleep in your arms

as you make a ruckus

and let your wind blow.
