Happy Birthday @Nickumsss!

Standard

22 years ago a fabulously loud butterfly graced us all with her presence and was born somewhere in Germany.  Who knew that eleven years later she would be brought into my life and would become my best friend?  Yes, today my best friend of over ten years turns 22 and, as if I didn’t remember it on my own, Ms. Nicole would never let me forget it.  You can bet that she was sending me countdowns to her birthday and reminding Twitter on a daily basis, which just goes to show how modest my BFF is, but that’s why she’s so loved… because she is so unapologetically her own person, making her absolutely one of a kind.

Sure, throughout the past ten years we’ve had our moments of stress and frustration, but we definitely never stopped loving one another.  I must say this girl has seen me during my highest of highs and my lowest of lows, but she’s never left me alone and she’s never judged me.  If anything, she has been my number one fan and has always encouraged me to grow into the person I am now.  I only hope that I have been just as good of a friend to her that she has been to me.

But, honestly, what can I say about my best friend that she doesn’t already know?  She’s hilarious, fabulous, loud, talkative, dramatic, loving, and, when she walks into a room, you know she’s arrived.  My Boo is the Katy Perry to my Rihanna.  She is like a sister to me and I feel so blessed to have her in my life.  I can’t tell you how awkward it is when people complain about how crappy their friends are, knowing that I’ve had Nicole for ten plus years and a group of other girlies who have my back no matter what.  I honestly hope everyone gets the chance to experience such a strong and healthy friendship because it really is a beautifully special thing.  At this point, I know me and my ride or die are in it for life and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Happy Birthday Boo!

Be Happy… It’s Valentine’s Day!

Standard

Okay, I agree that Valentine’s Day is a completely commercialized holiday that encourages people to spend money on chocolate, flowers, stuffed animals, and flowers, while managing to make single people feel lonelier than before and getting taken men into trouble for planning the wrong surprise (or not planning anything at all).  It’s horrible.  I get it.  But, on the same tip, isn’t every other holiday filled with cold commercialism, too?  Halloween, Thanksgiving, and even Christmas are far from pure holidays unexploited by big companies, so why hate on Valentine’s Day?  Just because you’re single or you don’t feel like taking your girlfriend out on a date?  That doesn’t seem fair.

The fact is Valentine’s Day isn’t going anywhere.  Stores will continue to stock up on red and white heart shaped items and advertisements won’t slow down on the amount of in love couples they show using their products.  Women will still want to have a valentine and men will still be expected to be generous gentlemen every February 14th.  So, since Valentine’s Day is sticking around, you might as well enjoy it.

Remember that Valentine’s Day is all about love, not hating on those who feel love.  Instead, focus on the love you have in your life, whether it’s the love you receive from those around you or the love you radiate to others.  Your parents, siblings, friends, and lovers are all in this web of love that you can appreciate on Valentine’s Day.  If you’re in a relationship, then you clearly have a significant other you can show your love to.  Even if you’re in the early stages of “dating” someone, use today as an excuse to talk to them.  You can’t tell me you don’t enjoy hearing their voice, so use Valentine’s Day as the perfect scapegoat.  If you’re single, then use today as a moment to appreciate the love your friends and family show you.

More importantly, love yourself on Valentine’s Day.  Isn’t that the first lesson of being confident, finding love, and all of that good stuff?  You have to love yourself before anyone else can.  I’m sick of all of the woe is me statuses, tweets, and Instagram posts about how you don’t have a hunny by your side this Valentine’s Day.  If that’s your attempt at getting a valentine next year, I can guarantee that projecting your bitterness isn’t going to attract as much honey to your beehive.

Personally, I used to loathe the dreaded Valentine’s Day holiday.  The red and pink aisle in Walmart used to annoy me to no end and I couldn’t wrap my head around the purpose of it all, but that was a while ago and I’ve evolved since then.  Now, I recognize that it’s just another reason to say “I love you” to the people I love.  It’s an excuse to show the love I have for the important people in my life and I see nothing wrong with that.  I’m happy to say that I have quite a few valentines this year that range anywhere from my loving madre to my best friend since middle school.  My valentines fill my heart in their own ways to the point where I feel complete.  I’m not missing any kind of love right now, so I don’t know about you, but I’m not going to be hating this Valentine’s Day.  It’s all about love.

True Love

Standard

I don’t think anybody knows what true love is until they’ve experienced feeling complete and utter joy purely from witnessing the happiness of another person.  Real love is when you could care less about what’s going on around you in the world, as long as the person you love is happy, you’re happy, too.  You see it all the time with parents, lovers, and friends.  They get happy when the ones they love are happy.  Christmas becomes a holiday about seeing the joy on children’s faces and birthdays are meant to be spent making your loved one’s day special.  Seeing someone dance, sing, and smile non-stop is beautiful and it’s even sweeter when the one you love is the person doing it all.  You may not be doing your favorite thing, but watching your loved one enjoy every minute of it makes everything worth it.  Even if whatever you’re doing  does make you happy on its own, the feeling you get from seeing the one you love be happy makes the experience priceless.

I’ve experienced this several times in my life and I think those moments are among the best ones I’ve ever witnessed.  It doesn’t matter what the situation is but seeing the person I love be happy makes me happy.  For me, this true love and this undeniable happiness is what makes a moment in time special.  It is what will make that memory one that will last a lifetime.  Notice that moment, savor that moment, and remember that moment for years to come.

Happy Birthday Triplets!

Standard

Today, two of my besties turn 21 and I want to wish them a very happy birthday!  Believe it or not, I have known them since middle school and we have loved each other ever since.  These two girls are amazing.  I have shared so many great memories with them and I can’t wait to create many more wonderful experiences with them either.  I’m so glad that our friendship has gotten stronger and I hope they know that I am here for them no matter what.  I still remember those summer nights we spent doing dance routines and watching movies or those days when boredom was cured by a much-needed long talk about life paired with a classic cypher in the basement.  I’ve clicked so well with my twin besties that the three of us became triplets.  Yes, they are my sisters from another mister and I love them with all my heart.  I am so looking forward to many more years of laughs, memories, good times, and pure friendship.  I simply love my triplets, so happy birthday!

Happy Birthday Nicole!

Today, my best friend turns 21, so watch out world because Nicole is here! In all seriousness though, I love this girl so much! She has been there for me through some of the hardest times in my life and she’s definitely been there for some of the best times, as well. We’ve been best friends for nearly 10 years now and I feel so blessed to have such an amazing friend in my life. I have some pretty awesome friends, but I surely can’t complain about having Nicole as my BFF. God forbid somebody besides Nicole (and a select few others) calls me their best friend because this girl will flip out on you. She’s my snookums, my boo, my ride or die, my reality show co-star, my best friend, my family. Put us together and you will forever be entertained by the love, bickering, laughter, and pure awesomeness. Yes, we are a pair of bad tricks. We’re horrible if you want to go that far and I will be there for her till the end. Nicole is simply a beautiful person. She is a young woman with so much potential, love, and light. Consider yourself lucky if you have the chance to chill with her and consider yourself blessed if she calls you her friend.

Boo,
I can’t wait to celebrate the big 2-1 with you and I can’t wait to share many more priceless memories together. I love you and I wish you nothing but the best on your birthday… just remember to keep it cute!

Happy Birthday Nicole!

Merry Christmas!

Standard

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!  I hope that you all will be able to spend this special day with the people you love the most, whether that means your family, your friends, your co-workers, or your neighbors.  Savor the warmth, joy, and love that you feel today.  Things may not be perfect right now.  You may not have a white Christmas or you may not have gotten everything you wanted for the holidays, but you certainly are not spending the day empty handed.  You will always have something to cheer you up, so focus on that and enjoy your Christmas.

Merry Christmas!

Happy Birthday Alexis!

Standard

She was one of my best friends in middle school and, even though going to different high schools distanced our friendship a little bit, we managed to stay close and she is still one of my best friends.  She’s my Lexipoo, my lover, and one of the girls I love most in this world.  Alexis has the ability to make me laugh at the stupidest things, enjoy retro anything with me, and just chill out poolside with me as we scope out the hotties!  Only my lover understands how amazing Donnie Wahlberg is, what “No… Yes… MAN” means, and how delicious Maiwand Kabob actually is.  I’ve had so many good times with her that I can’t even begin to tell you how much she means to me.  She’s certainly been there to listen and offer me advice.  She’s been there to laugh with me and even cry with me.  Since she moved down south, my lover and I are still as close as ever, but I’m so glad that I’ll be spending her 21st birthday with her.  Yup, if I thought she was trouble before she could legally drink, now imagine how she’ll be with the law on her side.  Either way, I love my Alexis so much and I wish her nothing but the best!  I can’t wait to experience the many more unforgettable memories that we’ll create together.

Happy Birthday Lover!
